The mini mill steel production process begins in rather unassuming surroundings – the scrap yard. See, unlike conventional integrated mills, which rely chiefly on coke and iron ore, Nucor uses 75-90% scrap steel as its “raw material.”
But don’t be deceived by the humble origins, the process is far more sophisticated than most people imagine.
The process begins with placing steel from our scrap yard into a charge bucket. Because each “heat” is custom-made even the composition of scrap that goes into the charge bucket is quite precise. Loaders follow a specific recipe for each of our customers.
